Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Stotra

द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग स्तोत्रम्

A short stotra of four verses naming the twelve Jyotirlingas and the regions they stand in. It is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, though no critical edition confirms that attribution. Pilgrims recite it as the memory-map of the twelve-shrine yatra.

Verses and the places they name

Original

सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथं च श्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम्। उज्जयिन्यां महाकालम् ओंकारेऽमलेश्वरम्॥

saurāṣṭre somanāthaṃ ca śrīśaile mallikārjunam | ujjayinyāṃ mahākālam oṃkāre'malêśvaram ||

Translation

Somanatha in Saurashtra and Mallikarjuna on Shrishaila; Mahakala in Ujjayini and Amaleshwara at Omkara.

What it means

The verse names shrines by region rather than by address — Saurashtra, Shrishaila, Ujjayini, Omkara — which is how the yatra was remembered before maps.
